Abstract

Algorithmic Institutionalism: The Changing Rules of Social and Political Life, by Ricardo F. Mendonça, Fernando Filgueiras, and Virgílio Almeida, published by Oxford University Press in 2023, offers an innovative and provocative approach to exploring algorithms as institutions. Throughout the book, the authors explore how algorithms and institutions shape individual and collective decisions and consequently impact social, political, and economic dynamics. This work invites the reflection on the advancement need of a new agenda focused on algorithmic institutionalism. With clarity and depth, the authors provide a theoretical exploration supported by case analyses and engage in debates on potential theoretical challenges and their solutions.
