Governo de si: maternidade como refúgio na prisão

The reflections presented here result from an ethnography conducted at the Tires Prison Establishment (Portugal), focusing on the Mothers' House (Casa das Mães) — a space designed for pregnant women and incarcerated women with children up to five years old. The research employed a combined methodological approach, including participant observation, document analysis, interviews, and the projection and discussion of documentary films. This study prioritizes the perspective of the interlocutors, aiming to highlight the strategies they mobilize in the dispute and management of everyday prison life, and beyond it. The reported resistance practices are not only configured as opposition to established power, but also as actions that sometimes integrate or contrast with it, forming an ambiguous field that spans both the constitution of the State and the experience of motherhood in a prison context.
